Email marketing is still the best-returning channel in digital marketing: industry studies put its average ROI at around €36 for every €1 invested. No other channel comes close, and the list belongs to you, so it doesn’t depend on anyone’s algorithm.

The paradox is that most small and mid-sized businesses neglect it: an unsegmented list, a newsletter that goes out “when there’s time” and zero automation. Let’s fix that.

The 3 pillars of email marketing that sells

  • 1. A clean list you own: attract subscribers with something of value (a guide, a discount, exclusive content) and remove inactive contacts every quarter. A thousand real readers are worth more than twenty thousand ghosts.
  • 2. Segmentation: a golfer doesn’t want the spa email. Splitting your list by interest, history or location lifts open rates and cuts unsubscribes.
  • 3. Automation: welcome, abandoned cart, post-purchase and reactivation. These are the emails that sell the most, and you only write them once.

What to send and how often (by type of business)

  • Ecommerce: weekly or fortnightly news and offers, plus cart and repurchase automations.
  • Hotels and golf: seasonal offers to your guest and player base. It’s the perfect channel for filling the low season, as we explain in our guide to hotel marketing.
  • Services and B2B: a monthly newsletter with a point of view: case studies, data and opinion. Sell authority, not urgency.
  • Health and insurance: useful communications (reminders, coverage, advice) with GDPR as a non-negotiable framework.

On frequency, the rule is simple: only send when you have something worth saying, but send consistently. A list that hears nothing from you for six months is no longer a list. It’s a cold database that will mark you as spam.

Essential metrics: opens, clicks, conversions and unsubscribes per send. Tools like Mailchimp or Brevo provide them out of the box; the real work is reading them and acting on them. We build email into our lead generation strategies because a lead that doesn’t buy today can be nurtured by email until they buy tomorrow.

Deliverability: the technical requirement almost nobody checks

Since Google and Yahoo tightened their sender requirements, email marketing comes with a mandatory technical toll: SPF, DKIM and DMARC set up on your domain. Without those three records, your emails go straight to spam, however good the content is. It’s a one-hour check that multiplies the performance of everything else.

The other essential piece of hygiene is list cleaning: contacts who haven’t opened anything in six months damage your sender reputation and inflate your platform costs. A reactivation campaign (“Still interested?”) followed by removing those who don’t respond improves deliverability for every send that follows. In email, a smaller, active list always beats a big, dead one, and we see it every time we clean up a new client’s database.

Email marketing FAQ

Does email marketing still work in 2026?

Yes, and better than ever: average ROI of around 36:1, stable deliverability and an audience tired of algorithms that values receiving what it asked for. It’s the owned channel par excellence.

How often should I send a newsletter?

Anywhere from weekly to monthly, depending on how much useful content you can produce. Consistency matters more than frequency: same day, same quality, zero filler.

How do I get subscribers without buying lists?

Never buy lists: it’s illegal under GDPR and useless. Offer value in exchange for the email address: guides, welcome discounts, exclusive content, in-venue Wi-Fi login or event registrations.

What’s a good open rate?

Between 20 and 40% depending on sector and list size. Below 15%, review your subject lines, sender name and list hygiene; above 40%, congratulations: your list is alive.
