Structured data is invisible code (Schema.org vocabulary in JSON-LD format) that translates your website into a language machines understand. It tells Google and AI tools who you are, what you sell, where you are and what your customers think of you.

It pays off twice: rich results in Google (stars, expandable FAQs, prices) and, increasingly, becoming the source that ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity can understand and cite. Without markup, your website is plain text; with it, it’s a citable database.

The schema types that deliver the most

  • Organization / LocalBusiness: your identity card: name, logo, address, phone number and social profiles. The foundation for everything else.
  • FAQPage: frequently asked questions that can appear expanded in Google and that AI reuses word for word in its answers.
  • Product and Offer: price, availability and ratings directly in search results. Essential for ecommerce.
  • Article / NewsArticle: authorship, date and context for each piece of content; a signal of freshness and reliability.
  • Service: what you do, who for and in which area; the perfect complement to local SEO.
  • Event: tournaments, open days and activities with date, venue and tickets shown directly in Google.

How to implement it properly (and the mistakes that get you penalised)

Google’s recommended method is JSON-LD in the <head> of every page: a block of code that has no effect on design. Each type has required and recommended properties documented on Schema.org and in Google’s guide; once implemented, you validate it with the Rich Results Test.

Mistakes we see every day: marking up reviews that don’t exist on the page (this can get you penalised), duplicating the same block across every URL without customising it, and leaving the markup an auto-generated template produces without checking it. Schema must reflect exactly what the page shows.

Every website built through our SEO and GEO positioning service comes with markup as standard: organization, services, FAQs and articles. It’s one of the reasons our clients show up in AI answers, as we explain in our guide to GEO marketing.

Schema and GEO: why AI prefers marked-up websites

Generative search engines build their answers from sources they can understand with certainty. When your page declares through structured data “I’m a business, these are my services, this is my area and these are the questions I answer”, you remove the ambiguity that leads a model to discard a source. In our measurements with clients, pages with FAQPage and Service markup are the ones most often cited in ChatGPT and Perplexity answers.

One implementation tip: keep your markup in sync with the visible content. If you change prices, opening hours or FAQs on the page, the JSON-LD must change at the same time; mismatches erode trust with both Google and AI models. That’s why on our websites the schema is generated from the same content, not as a separate block someone has to remember to update.

Frequently asked questions about structured data

What is structured data on a website?

Standardised code (Schema.org vocabulary, usually in JSON-LD format) that describes the content of each page so that search engines and AI models can understand it without ambiguity.

Does structured data improve rankings?

It isn’t a direct ranking factor, but it earns rich results with a higher CTR, helps Google understand and classify your content, and is decisive for appearing in AI answers.

How do I check whether my website has it?

Use Google’s Rich Results Test or the Schema.org validator: paste your URL and you’ll see which markup it detects and whether it has errors or warnings.

What is JSON-LD?

The format Google recommends for adding structured data: a script in JSON notation placed in the page’s head, separate from the visible HTML and easy to maintain and validate.
