Sports marketing has one raw material the rest of marketing envies: real emotion. Nobody cries at an insurance ad; a putt to win on the 18th hole is another story. The challenge is turning that emotion into brand, audience and revenue.

We have spent more than a decade doing exactly that in golf: with the PGA of Spain, the Royal Spanish Golf Federation (RFEG), Challenge Tour events such as the Bizkaia PGAe Open, and professional players. These are the 7 lessons we apply to every sports project.

7 sports marketing lessons that apply to any sport

  • 1. The story is in the people: the tournament is the stage; the protagonists are players, volunteers and fans. Tell people’s stories, not event schedules.
  • 2. Live is king, content is the kingdom: the event lasts three days; its content (video, reels, interviews) works for twelve months.
  • 3. The sponsor is an editorial partner: build their brand into stories the audience wants to watch, not into a logo stuck on as an afterthought.
  • 4. Every channel has its own rhythm: the countdown on social media, the match report in the press, the aftermovie on YouTube and the numbers in the newsletter.
  • 5. Local fans fill the stands: proximity communication (local media, clubs, schools) decides attendance.
  • 6. Data rules: reach, attendance, leads and sponsor return, measured and reported. No report, no renewal.
  • 7. A sports brand is built between events: what you do from Monday to Friday on social media and in the press is what gives the competition weekend its value.

From federations to individual athletes

With the RFEG and tournaments such as the Bizkaia PGAe Open, we handle the full communication mix: identity, daily content, drone and video coverage, and media relations. With athletes such as professional golfer Víctor Jiménez or the Miguel Ángel Jiménez academy, the work is personal branding: positioning, sponsorship and content.

The mechanics are the same as in our events and sports sponsorship service: well-told emotion, on the right channel, with measured results. If your project is in golf, we also have a full page dedicated to golf marketing.

The most undervalued asset: your fan database

Sports projects obsess over social media reach and tend to ignore their most valuable asset: first-party data. Every tournament registration, every ticket, every sign-up to the venue wifi is an identified fan you can talk to without paying a toll to any algorithm. Clubs and tournaments with a well-organised database sell their next events by email at almost zero cost, and offer sponsors a segmented audience that no billboard can match.

Our rule on every sports marketing project: no activation without data capture, and no data without a follow-up use. Sport generates emotion every weekend; the system that turns it into a lasting relationship is what separates organisations that grow from those that merely compete.

Sports marketing FAQs

What is sports marketing?

The discipline of applying marketing to sport in three directions: marketing for events and competitions, marketing for organisations and athletes, and brand marketing through sport (sponsorship).

What does a sports marketing agency do?

Strategy and branding for the organisation or event, communications and press, content and social media, video production, sponsor acquisition and activation, and measuring the return on all of the above.

How much does communications for a professional tournament cost?

It depends on scope: from €5,000-10,000 for the full communications of a large amateur tournament to far higher budgets for professional tour events with daily video production.

How do you measure success in sports marketing?

With indicators for each audience: attendance and viewership, content reach and engagement, equivalent media value for the sponsor, and direct revenue (tickets, registrations, leads).
